Avoiding Online Scams
The digital world is amazing, but it is also full of traps. Scammers are getting smarter, using AI to trick even smart people. Here is how to spot them.
Red Flag 1: Urgency
- "Your account will be deleted in 24 hours!"
- "Act now or go to jail!" The Reality: Legitimate banks and government agencies do not pressurize you with instant threats. If you feel panicked, STOP. That is what they want.
Red Flag 2: "Too Good To Be True" Returns
- "Guaranteed 5% daily returns!"
- "AI Trading Bot realizes 1000% profit!" The Reality: There is no such thing as a guaranteed high return. If there was, they wouldn't sell the secret to you; they would keep it for themselves.
Red Flag 3: Payment in Weird Ways
- "Pay the IRS with Gift Cards."
- "Send Bitcoin to unlock your computer." The Reality: No legitimate business asks to be paid in iTunes gift cards or crypto for standard services.
The "Deepfake" Scam
Scammers can now clone voices.
- Scenario: You get a call from your "grandson" saying he is in jail and needs money. The voice sounds exactly like him.
- The Defense: Create a "Safe Word" with your family. If someone calls claiming to be family in trouble, ask for the safe word. If they don't know it, hang up.
Your skepticism is your best shield.
